A Basic Primer
Sunscreens are products designed to be applied to your skin to protect it from UVB rays. They are available as lotions, gels, sprays, mists, powders, and creams.
SPF
SPF is a standardized measure that is a regulated claim by the FDA. SPF is not a marketing term, it has substance. If a sunscreen has an SPF of 30 and a moisturizer with sunscreen has an SPF of 30, then these products offer the same sun protection benefits if adequately applied and reapplied.
Broad Spectrum
Sunscreens were designed by the beauty industry to specifically block UVB rays to reduce the tendency to burn in the sun allowing people to stay outdoors longer. They were not designed to block UVA rays. In recent years, companies are starting to use ingredients that offer some UVA protection, however the SPF value does not reflect the effectiveness of these ingredients.
